Sea lions are the dogs of the ocean, and I mean that as a compliment. Curious, fast, and completely unbothered by a camera, they will swim straight at you, blow a curtain of bubbles in your face, then hang there waiting to see what you do next. Photographing them is less like wildlife work and more like being invited into a game. This collection gathers my favorite California sea lion images: a bull blowing bubbles, a warning I learned to read the hard way, sea lions piled on a harbor buoy like lords of a small kingdom, and a pack of them working a bait ball alongside hunting mahi mahi.
