My Unforgettable Diving Adventure in Hawaii

My journey to Hawaii’s Big Island was nothing short of extraordinary. Over the course of eleven days, I completed 30 dives and spent 25 hours underwater, immersing myself in the breathtaking underwater world. Seven of those days were spent aboard the Kona Aggressor, a live-aboard dive boat that took us to some of the best dive sites along the Kona coast.

Upon arriving at Kona Harbor on a sunny Friday afternoon, I hopped on a quick shuttle from the airport. My driver, a friendly Hawaiian local, casually mentioned that he’s friends with Ziggy Marley and Peter Tosh whenever they visit the Big Island. As I waited at the harbor, fellow divers began to gather, and soon, the Kona Aggressor arrived, ready to embark on our adventure.

First Night Aboard: A Sunset Welcome

That evening, we settled into our rooms and enjoyed a delicious steak dinner on the top deck beneath a picturesque pink sky. Captain James gave us a thorough safety and trip briefing, introducing the amazing crew who would guide us through the week. The plan was simple—slowly meander down the Kona coast, diving at the most spectacular sites. Our itinerary included manta ray night dives, drift dives, wall dives, lava tube explorations, and cave dives.

This trip was also my first opportunity to test out my new diving gear and camera setup. Armed with my Sony RX100MII camera and Nauticam housing, I focused on capturing the beauty of Hawaii’s underwater world in stunning detail.

I also used the AERIS Jetpack BCD, an innovative travel BCD that doubles as a backpack, making it easy to transport all my gear in a compact unit. My AERIS A300ai dive computer, AERIS ION regulators, and Accel fins performed flawlessly, ensuring smooth and effortless dives.

The Magic of the Manta Rays

The absolute highlight of my dives was encountering manta rays, particularly one special moment at dusk. I had drifted away from my dive buddy, scanning the depths when suddenly, a lone manta ray emerged from the blue. For several minutes, I watched in awe as it gracefully glided past me, moving effortlessly over the vibrant reef. It was a surreal and humbling experience, one that I’ll never forget.

The Kona coast’s coral reefs were thriving, bursting with color and life. Visibility stretched over 100 feet, and even at depth, sunlight danced across the reef’s surface. Night dives revealed an entirely different world—Spanish dancers twirling in the dark, zebra morays lurking in the shadows, a titan conch preying on a crown-of-thorns starfish, and even a curious octopus weaving through the corals.

Life on Board: Great Food & Great Company

When not diving, I spent time charging my cameras, reviewing footage, and enjoying the incredible food aboard the Aggressor. Every meal was a feast—mornings began with made-to-order eggs, cinnamon rolls, fresh tropical fruit, yogurt, bacon, and sausage. Lunches ranged from sandwiches to Greek, Italian, or Mexican spreads, while dinners were a gourmet affair, featuring steak, tuna steak, salmon, chicken, and pork.

One of my favorite perks? The morning coffee service, where the crew would wake us up with a steaming cup of coffee, making the early dives that much more enjoyable.

After seven days at sea, we returned to Kona, where I had the chance to film a traditional Luau at the Sheraton Kona Resort. Beyond the festivities, the hotel itself is a prime diving location—every night, dozens of manta rays gather just offshore, drawn by the plankton illuminated by the resort’s lights. It was the perfect way to conclude an already unforgettable trip.

A Trip to Remember

From the thrill of drift dives to the serenity of a solo manta encounter, every moment of this trip was pure magic. My new gear performed seamlessly, the marine life was spectacular, and the experience left me longing for my next underwater adventure.
