Caribbean Costa Rica was the first stop on my seven-month backpacking and photography adventure through Central America. It was a fantastic choice—relaxing, stunning, and full of natural beauty. Apart from a brief run-in with a pack of wild dogs, my time here was pure bliss.

Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, a charming coastal town, exudes a laid-back Caribbean vibe with a strong Rasta influence. Known for its breathtaking beaches, lush jungles, and excellent surf spots, it’s a haven for travelers looking to embrace nature and adventure. One of the highlights of the area is the Gandoca Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge, just a few miles away. Many visitors rent bikes to explore the refuge, though the humid jungle air makes the ride feel much longer.

A must-visit stop in Puerto Viejo is Rocking Jay’s, a popular hostel where budget travelers can find cheap accommodations and lively dance parties. Whether you stay the night or just stop by for a cocktail, it’s a great place to meet fellow travelers.

The Enchanting Jungles of Manzanillo

Manzanillo is more than just a beach destination—it’s a rich, biodiverse jungle and an important refuge for endangered species. The rivers are home to manatees, while the treetops shelter elusive jaguars. Offshore, an impressive coral reef offers fantastic snorkeling and diving opportunities. If you’re looking for an unforgettable underwater adventure, head to Punta Uva Dive Center for a guided SCUBA dive.

I spent a week in Puerto Viejo, splitting my time between a hostel and camping on the beach. My days were filled with wandering through town, capturing moments through my camera lens, and relaxing on the shore with a rum and coke in hand. Exploring the jungle in Manzanillo was an exhilarating experience, as I kept my eyes peeled for rare harpy eagles and the ever-elusive jaguar. Though I didn’t spot either, the thrill of the search made the experience unforgettable.

Snorkeling and Sunset Magic

One of the highlights of my time in Manzanillo was snorkeling along the vibrant coral reef just off the beach. The reef was in relatively good shape, and the water was crystal clear, making for a spectacular experience.

On my final morning, I awoke early in my tent, drenched in the sticky jungle heat. But my discomfort was quickly forgotten when I was greeted by an unforgettable Caribbean sunrise. Standing by the tide pools, I watched as golden sun rays pierced through the sky, reflecting off the ocean’s surface in an ever-changing display of light. With my camera in hand, I captured some of the most breathtaking images of my trip—an unforgettable farewell to Puerto Viejo de Talamanca.

Caribbean Costa Rica was an incredible start to my journey. From jungle treks to underwater adventures, every moment was filled with discovery. If you’re seeking a destination that combines relaxation with adventure, Puerto Viejo and Manzanillo are must-visit locations.
