Lingerie campaigns live or die on fabric, silhouette and register. Above water, in a studio, most of them end up looking like each other. Underwater, none of them do.
Lace and mesh refract light in a way you cannot fake in post. Silk, satin and chiffon drape and float instead of hanging. Slips and robes move, which is the entire point of a slip or a robe and the one thing a studio cannot show you. And talent holds shapes that are simply not available on land, so the body language reads as elegant rather than arranged.

Why Underwater Works for Lingerie

Fabric. Lace, mesh, silk, satin and chiffon all behave differently in water. Flowing pieces drape and lift and show their construction. Structured pieces go sculptural, because the fabric sits clean against the body with none of the compression marks or standing distortion that a dry set produces. Underwater is, oddly, the most honest way to photograph how a garment is actually built.
Light. Refracted light produces caustics, dappling and colour gradients that read instantly as elevated editorial rather than catalogue. It is very difficult to reproduce in post and consumers recognise it without being able to say why.
Register. This is the one lingerie brands care about most and say least. Weightlessness produces a body language that is graceful rather than posed, which lands the campaign in an artistic register instead of an overtly sexual one. For most lingerie brands, that is precisely the line they are trying to walk, and water walks it for you.
What I Shoot for Lingerie and Intimates Brands
- Campaign hero imagery. The three to eight frames that define a season or a launch. Paid social, homepage, lookbook covers, editorial pitches.
- Lookbooks. Full collection coverage, combining underwater hero work with surface and poolside frames so the story holds together.
- Sleepwear and loungewear. Robes, slips and flowing nightwear are the single best fit for underwater work, because fabric movement is what makes those pieces sell and water amplifies it.
- Editorial and PR. Fashion editorial, magazine pitches, brand storytelling, awards submissions, press assets.
- Bridal and special occasion. The dreamlike quality of underwater imagery suits the emotional positioning of bridal lines better than almost any other treatment.
- Behind the scenes. Stills and video from the shoot. Underwater production is strange to watch, and the BTS reliably outperforms as teaser content.

How an Underwater Shoot Runs
Most lingerie brands have not commissioned underwater work before. The differences from a studio day are almost entirely logistical, and they are my problem rather than yours.
Pre production
We start with a brief and references. I go through the collection and tell you which pieces will carry underwater and which will fight it, recommend the pool setup based on the look, and lock logistics around talent, hair and makeup, styling and art direction. Two to four weeks for a campaign.
The shoot day
Four to eight hours. Talent works in short underwater intervals with surface rests between, so the pacing is unlike a dry set, and I coach breath holds, posing and movement in the water throughout. Hair and makeup is chosen for water. Wardrobe is rotated so wet pieces dry while others shoot.
Lingerie specifically needs careful handling. Wet lace snags, wet trim stretches, and neither forgives you. Pieces get inspected before and after every interval, and I ask brands to send a backup unit of anything especially delicate. This is the part that separates a photographer who has shot lingerie underwater from one who is about to learn.
Post production
Underwater post takes longer than dry post: colour correction, particle and bubble cleanup, and getting skin tones right through several feet of water. Seven to fourteen days for the finished selection. Raw selects inside 48 hours if you are up against a deadline.
Denver Based, Shooting Globally
My base is Denver, Colorado, with ongoing access to indoor and outdoor pools suited to fashion production. Heated water, which matters more than brands expect, because cold talent stops performing after an hour. Controlled light and no weather risk. Privacy for high profile talent. Wardrobe and hair and makeup space beside the pool. Multi day scheduling.
For on location campaigns I shoot globally, with working relationships in Baja California, the Florida springs, the Caribbean, Tonga and Indonesia.
Most brands shoot their first underwater campaign in the Denver pool, because a controlled environment lets everyone concentrate on the creative instead of the conditions.
Why Me

I have been an underwater photographer since 2006. I shot the cover of Billie Eilish’s Hit Me Hard and Soft, underwater. I have a background in ecology and evolutionary biology, six years running marketing across a portfolio of dive brands, and an audience of 200,000 plus on Instagram with monthly reach in the millions, which is occasionally useful to a campaign and is never the reason to hire me.
The reason to hire me is narrower. Plenty of fashion photographers will take a camera into a pool. Very few of them are actually at home in water, and it shows immediately in the frame rate and in how the talent behaves. Water is where I work. I can direct people in it, solve problems in it, and shoot at the pace a paid campaign demands rather than the pace a novelty shoot allows.

What It Costs
It depends on scope, deliverables, usage rights and travel, and the range is genuinely wide. A half day in a Denver pool and a multi day production on location are not the same species of project.
Rather than quote a number that will be wrong for your brief, every project gets a written proposal after a short discovery call. A real figure, with options, and no surprises later.
Standard inclusions: pre production, shoot direction, talent coaching in water, lighting, all camera and housing equipment, post production and colour correction, web and print resolution deliverables, and a round of revisions. Talent, hair and makeup, styling, art direction, extended usage rights and travel are quoted on top.
Emerging brand with a tight budget and a good idea? Say so. I still take those on.
Start a Conversation
If you are evaluating underwater photographers for a lingerie or intimates campaign, the fastest route is a short discovery call. We talk through the collection, the goals, the timing and the deliverables, and I come back with a written proposal.
If you already have a brief and dates, send them over with any references and I will respond within a working day.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this a boudoir photography service?
No. Allure Aqua is a commercial campaign and brand photography practice. I work with lingerie and intimate wear brands on campaign imagery, lookbooks and editorial. I do not offer personal boudoir sessions.
What lingerie pieces work best underwater?
Anything that moves. Slips, babydolls, robes and flowing pieces are the clearest win, because water does something to loose fabric that no studio can. Lace and mesh refract light in a way that is essentially impossible to reproduce dry. Bodysuits and structured pieces go sculptural, because the fabric sits clean against the body with no compression marks or standing distortion. Heavily boned corsetry and rigid moulded cups are the pieces that tend to fight the water.
Where do you shoot underwater lingerie campaigns?
Denver, Colorado, where I have ongoing access to indoor and outdoor pools set up for fashion production: heated water, controlled light, no weather risk, privacy for high profile talent, and wardrobe and hair and makeup space beside the pool. For on location work I shoot globally, with working relationships in Baja California, the Florida springs, the Caribbean, Tonga and Indonesia.
How do you handle delicate lace and trim underwater?
With protocols, because wet lace snags and stretches and it will not forgive you. Pieces are inspected before and after every underwater interval, anything water soluble stays off set, and damage gets flagged immediately rather than discovered in post. I ask brands to send one or two backup units of anything especially delicate.
Do models need to know how to freedive or hold their breath?
No. No diving or freediving experience is required. I coach talent through breath holds, posing and movement in the water on the day, and most professional models are comfortable within the first hour. If you have already booked talent, a short pre shoot pool orientation is worth the time.
How long does an underwater lingerie shoot take?
Four to eight hours on the day. Talent works in short underwater intervals, five to thirty seconds down and then a rest at the surface, so the rhythm is nothing like a dry studio day. Pre production for a campaign runs two to four weeks.
How long do final images take to deliver?
Seven to fourteen days for the curated, edited selection. Raw selects inside 48 hours if you are against a publication deadline. Underwater post takes longer than dry post because of colour correction and particle and bubble cleanup.
What usage rights do brands receive?
Standard packages cover a single campaign across digital, social and standard editorial use for one year. Expanded rights, including broadcast, out of home, perpetual licensing and talent re use, are quoted separately based on scope.
Can our team be on set?
Yes. Brand reps, art directors, marketing leads and stylists are welcome. The pool studios I work with have monitor feeds so you can review in real time. For pre launch campaigns and talent under NDA I run closed sets with signed crew NDAs.
Do you work with emerging lingerie brands?
Yes. I take on capsule shoots for smaller brands when the brief is creatively interesting. If the budget is tight, say so up front and we will work out what is possible.
How much does an underwater lingerie campaign cost?
It depends on scope, deliverables, usage rights and travel. A half day in a Denver pool and a multi day on location production are not the same kind of project. Every brief gets a written proposal after a short discovery call, so you get a real number rather than a guess.
